Next step forward sea cucumber out-grow in the Bay of Cadiz, Spain.
The Applied Research and Innovation Department of CTAQUA is working on advancing towards the sustainable culture of juvenile sea cucumber (H. arguinensis) in ponds by studying their growth, feeding pattern, diet preferences and stoking density.
In order to clarify some knowledge gaps, three tests were carried out. The first two will be carried out in CTAQUA's pilot plant where their growth and nutritional composition was tested based on three substrates and experimental diets at stable temperature conditions. The initial results were essential to select the cultivation area due to substrate preferences that will provide the culture with the highest success rate in the growth of juveniles. After designating the cultivation area, experiments will be carried out at two culture densities and at different depths.
We hope to strengthen the basis for the implementation of holothurian culture in estuaries, thus working on the diversification of species, promoting the culture of species of low trophic level and promoting the possibilities of aquaculture in our region.
