Rota champions artisanal fishing and local seafood at a pioneering conference
The Institute of Employment and Socioeconomic and Technological Development (IEDT) of the Provincial Council of Cádiz backed the First Conference on Rota Fish and the National Market, held under the European AQUAFISH 0.0 project.
The Castillo de Luna in Rota hosted the First Conference on Rota Fish and the National Market on 25 June 2026, an initiative promoted by the Artisanal Fish Producers' Organisation of the Conil Fish Market (OPP72) in collaboration with the Institute of Employment and Socioeconomic and Technological Development (IEDT) of the Provincial Council of Cádiz, and with the support of the Rota Town Council. The conference formed part of the European AQUAFISH 0.0 project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme.
Conceived as a space for knowledge transfer, innovation and the promotion of local seafood, the event brought together some 72 participants from close to 40 institutions and organisations, including public administrations, fishing sector organisations, technology and research centres, universities, hospitality schools, restaurateurs, gastronomy professionals and civil society. This diversity of profiles fostered a genuinely multidisciplinary forum in which the production, science, business, education and gastronomy communities converged around a shared goal: strengthening the value chain of Rota's artisanal fishery.
A programme built around governance, innovation and sustainability
The conference was structured into three thematic sessions. The opening panel, “Joining Networks: The Public Commitment to the Fishing Sector”, underlined the importance of institutional cooperation for the future of artisanal fishing. A second session addressed research, innovation and knowledge transfer within the AQUAFISH project, exploring how digitalisation and applied R&D can enhance the competitiveness of fishing enterprises and open new markets. The third session focused on sustainability, the valorisation of local seafood, and the connection between the sea, the restaurant sector and the final consumer.
One of the central themes of the meeting was the promotion of the Rota Fish Collective Brand, a tool designed to identify catches landed at the local fish market and to guarantee consumers a fresh, locally sourced product with full traceability. The brand incorporates QR-based labelling systems that allow the journey of the fish to be traced from catch to point of sale, reinforcing transparency and commercial differentiation.

Gastronomy as a driver of valorisation
The conference closed with a show-cooking session under the theme “The Gastronomy of Full Use: Rota Fish and Zero Waste”, led by specialists from the University Classroom of Marine Gastronomy (AUGAM–CEIMAR–University of Cádiz) and the Fernando Quiñones Hospitality School of the Provincial Council of Cádiz. The demonstrations showed how the integral use of fish can generate added value, reduce food waste and promote a more sustainable cuisine. Meagre (corvina), one of the most emblematic species of Rota's fleet, was the protagonist of this first edition, and the day concluded with a tasting offered by the Los Borriquetes Gastronomic Association, prepared with locally landed seafood.
A firm commitment to the blue economy
With this initiative, the IEDT and OPP72 consolidate a joint line of work aimed at promoting artisanal fishing, driving innovation, transferring knowledge to the sector and opening new commercial opportunities. The First Conference on Rota Fish and the National Market thus establishes solid foundations for future editions, positioning Rota's seafood as a benchmark of quality, sustainability and traceability, and reaffirming the commitment of the Provincial Council of Cádiz to the blue economy as an engine of territorial development.
